New Delhi, July 16, 2024 – In response to the growing need for trustworthy AI adoption, leading Indian AI startups, along with think-tanks, research organisations, universities and industry, have come together to form the Coalition for Responsible Evolution of AI (CoRE-AI). The 30+ member coalition, with its secretariat at The Dialogue, will deliberate on AI governance, skilling, awareness and technical competencies and provide a platform to demonstrate the innovation and use cases of AI in India. The coalition comprises four working groups, consisting of AI and Innovation, DPI and AI, Human-centered AI and AI governance.
About CoRE-AI
AI technology and its application across sectors have provided numerous social and economic benefits. In the last few years, this versatile technology has significantly impacted our daily lives, work, interactions, and lifestyles. This deeper integration of AI within our society comes with its own set of opportunities and challenges. While on one hand it promises to drive socio-economic growth and welfare, on the other hand, there is a potential for abuse and risks that must be mitigated. Therefore, as we usher into the AI era, there is a need to revisit our social norms and values to ensure that we maximise the benefits and minimise the harms, i.e., the responsible evolution of AI.
Every stakeholder, from the government to industry, startups, civil society and academia, will have a role to play. Collective thinking will be critical as we navigate the path to make AI safer, while ensuring that it solves our most complex problems. CoRE-AI is an attempt to foster this collective thinking and action, by forming a multi-stakeholder coalition, and to contribute to India’s AI journey.
In his video message addressing the launch event of Core-AI, Mr. S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, said the following:
“The world expects India to take leadership, especially on behalf of the Global South, in this critical area of application of AI, and hence the kind of voice that India will have in this space, the kind of leadership role that it will have will greatly influence the way the ethical stance on AI will also evolve and the way that we would be able to apply AI in a manner that works for everybody. Government welcomes support, and interventions from a wide range of players who can bring the relevant information to the table on this aspect. And taking in all of these inputs, undoubtedly a robust framework will emerge where India will also be able to not just use AI for the benefit of its own people, but play a leadership role globally. I’m confident the CoRE-AI forum will contribute to this larger national goal.”
Suparna Singh, Member of the Executive Committee of CoRE-AI and CEO of Frammer AI, welcomed the coalition’s establishment and said that for AI to be responsibly built for the maximum collective good, there has to be explicit collaboration between start-ups, capital, policy-makers, big tech, academia, and, yes, users. Only with frequent conversations and combined actions can we ensure that we are innovating at the scale and transparency that AI requires.
Ms. Sangeeta Gupta, Executive Committee Member of CoRE-AI, and VP and Chief Strategy Officer, NASSCOM, spoke about the need to focus on AI adoption, while at the same time, highlighting the importance of an enabling environment by the government. Kazim Rizvi, Founder of The Dialogue, highlighted the need for a diverse set of stakeholders to deliberate on the future governance of AI, while at the same time, developing a platform that showcases AI innovation taking place in India.
“CoreAI is one of the most vital coalitions for responsible AI. This unique platform brings together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and ethicists to create smart, forward-thinking AI policies. By fostering inclusive dialogue and offering expert insights, CoreAI ensures AI development is both ethical and innovative. It’s the first of its kind, setting new standards for how we govern and benefit from AI”, remarked Dr Vidhi Bhanushali, Co-founder & CEO, scanO
